Crisp nights, cool days, the aspen and the tamarack
are changing into beautiful autumn colors - it's
October!

When I discovered felting, I finally found the creative
outlet for which I had been searching. As a self taught
fiber artist, the versatility of fiber allows me to "play"
with a wide variety of materials including wool, silk,
fabrics, yarns and threads. Creating one of a kind fiber
art pieces to share with the world fulfills my creative
passion.
One technique that I especially enjoy is the ancient
technique of felt making. Traditionally to make felt, raw
or dyed wool was dampened with soapy water and
agitated (usually by stomping or rolling) to "felt" the
wool. I use this traditional method of wet felting as
well as dry felting with needles, either by hand or
machine. I then embellish the felt with free motion
machine embroidery, hand stitching and other
techniques to develop a unique design.
As I continue my journey into fiber art, I am learning to
look at the world more clearly and closely. I am
inspired by the beauty of the natural world, be it
an "ordinary" piece of grass, a tiny bit of lichen or the
gorgeous Montana landscapes. When you look at my
work, I want you to be drawn into the layers and details
of the rich, textural surface and to "feel" the joy of its
creation.

| Carin's Corner - Changing Seasons |
 |
|
A change of season is always a great time to take an
inventory and assessment of our homes. As our lives
and family members change our houses may well
need some minor adjustments to accommodate
growing children, new babies, kids off to college,
visiting parents or a new puppy.
Start by taking a look at the whole house to see if it is
working well for you and your family's lifestyle. Is there
a natural easy flow from one space to the next? Then
take a look at each room. Make notes of areas that no
longer work or are frustrating to you. For instance a
kitchen that worked when the children were little but is
now very congested with 3 teenagers. You may be
able to re-arrange the eating area or add stools to the
counter area or this room may need more significant
changes in the future.
You'll end up with a list of ideas to make living more
functional and comfortable. Some ideas may mean
major changes and you can begin to plan for these in
the future. Minor changes like re-arranging furniture,
de-cluttering and reorganizing storage areas like the
mudroom and the laundry can make a huge difference
to how a house feels and functions as can painting a
room or changing accessories.

| Joke of the Month |

At the busy dental office where Susan worked, one
patient was always late. Once when Susan called to
confirm an appointment, he said, "I'll be about 15
minutes late. That won't be a problem, will it?"
"No," She told him. "We just won't have time to give
you an anesthetic."
He arrived early.

Ruth's Ramblings |

The last Gallery Nights for 2009 was held October 1st.
I'm a bit embarrassed by the self promotion, but
because of a late cancellation by another artist, I am
the featured artist for the month of October. I have
been doing fiber art for three years now. I hope
you'll stop in to see what I've been creating. Also, if you
know any artists who might be interested in
participating in next year's Gallery Nights, have them
give me a call. I'd love to see some new work that I
haven't carried before.
I had a request to update all of you on the Third Street
road construction. It has been a bit of a mess but
besides the dogs having to go an extra block or so to
go out, it hasn't been that detrimental to business.
There is still access to all businesses downtown and
even though the road is blocked, you can still get
down to see us by coming down second and turning
on to Central Ave from there.
According to the city manager, the new sanitary sewer
and water line systems are nearly complete and
underground dry utilities (power, phone, cable)
conduit installations have begun. They are starting to
form the new road base and have begun installing
curbs and gutters from Spokane Ave, working
westward. They will be removing the overhead power
lines as they will now be buried so this will allow more
room on the sidewalks without the power poles.
Don't forget Trick or Treating downtown for the kiddies!
It's in the afternoon of October 30th and is a really fun
and safe way to let your kids trick or treat. The
costumes are always so creative so even if you don't
have kids, it's fun to come down and see the parade of
costumes. We'll have lots of candy to give away so
bring all those costumed characters down for a fun
afternoon.
Season Two of the Craft in America series on PBS will
begin airing tomorrow, Wednesday, October 7th from
8-10pm. You'll need to check your local listings as I
believe that might be the time for EST. Their are two
new episodes called Origins and Process. I hope
you'll take a few minutes to watch and learn more
about craft.
