  • Artist Spotlight - Sallie Bowen
Watercolor of Fog on Lake MacDonald

In July we are featuring work by Butte painter Sallie Bowen. Sallie has been painting for most of her life. Subject matter comes from her own experiences, travel, sketches, and recollections. Many of the paintings evolve and go through many changes. At times the transformation is a slow process, and at others, can marvelously "flow" from one stage to another with little effort. She is always surprised that something- the visual imagery- can come from "nothing", or no preconceived idea. Oftentimes, color is arbitrary, giving the work a more personal touch. Shapes come out of negative spaces and these "found shapes" must work with the "internal logic" of the paintings.

Sallie feels that to participate in art is to celebrate life. "Our short existence on this earth demands that we give full attention. Being an artist is both an honor and a responsibility to spend time wisely in producing the best work."

    Garden Dining

At last summer is here in all its glory. It is the one time of year when we happily live outside. Try creating a transition between outside and inside with some of these ideas:

Introduce cool colors during the summer months. Blues, greens and pastels will make a space feel more open, calmer and more relaxing in hot weather. Change accessories like toss cushions, candles, and lampshades to one of these colors.

Take up area rugs and replace them with jute carpets. A wide variety is available locally at reasonable prices. Better yet, try placing one of these carpets on your covered porch or patio to make it feel more like summer room.

Create an area to eat outside. Make it close enough to the kitchen so it easy to prepare, serve food and clean up. Use the same colors you have inside for placemats, napkins, candles and other accessories on your porch or deck. This will make a nice flow from inside to outside.

Start a summer collection of art and accessories. It's a great way to beat the heat and create a calm cool house for the summer.

    Joke of the Month

David just got a GPS for his car, and his first trip with it was to a drugstore. Since the manual said not to leave it in the car unattended, David brought it with him into the store. While there, the GPS came alive, and a voice stated, "Lost satellite contact."

He wasn't embarrassed until a woman turned to him and said, "Your ankle bracelet monitor is talking to you."

Have you heard about all the new, cool stuff up on the mountain? Whitefish Mountain Resort has added a zip line and alpine slide to it's summer attractions. Take a look at all their summer activities on their website. My husband went and had a wonderful time. He said it was great fun!

Don't miss out on the fun Fourth of July festivities here in Whitefish. There's an arts and crafts fair this weekend and there's always fireworks to watch. The Going to the Sun Road is now open so plan your visit soon.

If you missed Gallery Nights, do stop in and take a look at Sallie Bowen's work. She has a variety of different sizes of paintings, making her work affordable for everyone.
