A new year is upon us. Time to make your resolutions
(or not) and decide what you would like to achieve in
this upcoming year. If you have any new ideas for what
you'd like to see here at The Purple Pomegranate, do
let me know as we'll be off to the buying show in
February.

Buff Brown worked for a Pennsylvania furniture maker
and designer who kept a basketful of small,
organically shaped cutting boards on the floor of his
office. They were made from choice hardwood scraps
he couldn't bear to chuck in the burn pile. Buff really
liked them. They reminded him of the shapes
Alexander Calder used for his mobiles and
sculptures.
Later on, seeing the cutting boards Wharton Esherick
made (he's known as the "Dean of American
Craftsmen") the idea of making beautiful, one-of-a-
kind objects out of something as basic and utilitarian
as a cutting board hit home. That was ten years ago.
Many people who see Brown's boards say they're too
pretty to cut on. Once they give in to doing so, a long-
lasting relationship is formed. Buff loves the look of a
cutting board's surface after years of use - an
ingrained tool of daily ritual. Buff creates his shapes in
Livingston, Montana along with his lovely wife, Sharon.

One aspect of good design is the ability to create
warm nurturing spaces. As the winter months set in
with shorter days and colder temperatures we look
forward to getting home in the evenings and spending
time in the comfort of our homes.
Take a look around the house and see what you might
do to make sure the house is warm and inviting.
Perhaps you need a basket for firewood near the
stove. You might add a throw along the back of a sofa.
It's important to have adequate light in the winter
especially with our frequent grey skies. You may want
to add lamps in the living room or wherever you spend
time in the evening. Check your children's rooms to
make sure there is sufficient light for playing,
homework and reading.
You can add reds, gold, and other rich colors by
making a centerpiece on the table or placing a bowl of
red apples on the counter. Winter seems to heighten
one's sense of smell. Cinnamon, pumpkin and
apples are wonderful and welcoming aromas. If you
aren't a baker try lighting candles with these scents.
These small changes will make coming home from
school or work a pleasure.
Making a bit of extra effort will make sure that our
homes are not only comfortable but also comforting
during the winter months.

As a concierge at a posh resort, John was often asked
about the ski facilities. One day a couple, who had just
checked in after a long flight, came by and asked him
where the lift was. "Go down this hall," John told
them, "out the door, past the pool, 200 yards down the
block and you'll see it on your right."
Their tired faces suddenly looked even more
exhausted, until the man behind them spoke
up. "They're from England," he said. "I think they're
looking for the elevator."

I hope everyone had a happy and safe holiday
season. I had a wonderful Christmas because I finally
got a new pair of ski boots that don't hurt my foot. I've
been skiing for years in pain because I could never
find a boot that fit correctly. On Christmas Day I skied
for four hours without pain and what a happy day it
was. Plus the day was absolutely gorgeous. There
was an inversion and there we were skiing in the
sunshine, pain free. Yippee!
I totally forgot about doing a coupon for the Christmas
season. So I have added one to this newsletter.
Check at the bottom of the page for a coupon that
gives you 20% off your entire purchase good during
the month of January. Treat yourself to that gift you
didn't receive for Christmas and get 20% off!
As I am writing this it's beginning to snow and it's
supposed to snow all week. I'm looking forward to
2010 and the rest of the ski season. I hope I'll see you
this winter either on the slopes or at the
store. Happy New Year!
