This holiday season is truly one where one might consider the thought that less is more. From a design perspective it is certainly an authentic direction to pursue. Don't feel you need to use everything you have accumulated over the years. Think about having a theme. Consider the style and feel of your home. Perhaps it would suit a Victorian theme, an old fashioned one or a sophisticated more contemporary look using silver and blue. Follow the theme throughout your house with candles, tableware, greenery and wrapping paper and ribbon. You'll probably be able to use a number of things you have and add ribbon, lace or other details to fit the theme.

With children nature is a great theme. You might bake gingerbread men and decorate the tree with white lights, gingerbread men and add cranberry and popcorn garlands. Don't forget to decorate a few outside trees with garlands for the birds and squirrels. Wrapping paper might be brown paper the kids can decorate with crayons, magic markers or paint.

Hopefully thinking less is more will mean stress is less and the holidays more fun.

    Joke of the Month

Every December it was the same excruciating tradition. Our family would get up at the crack of dawn, go to a Christmas tree farm and tromp across acres of snow in search of the perfect tree. Hours later our feet would be freezing, but Mom would press on, convinced the tree of her dreams was "just up ahead."

One year I snapped. "Mom, face it. The perfect tree doesn't exist. It's like looking for a man. Just be satisfied if you can find one that isn't dead, doesn't have too many bald spots and is straight."

Don't miss Christmas Stroll this year. The Chamber of Commerce is really putting on a big party with a caroling contest, a merry go round parade which means you walk around the floats instead of the floats moving down the street, street vendors, roasted chestnuts and all the stores beautifully decorated for Christmas. The stroll is December 11th from 5:45 pm to 9:00 pm. We'll be open and serving hot spiced cider and cookies. Nanci is busily working away on our Christmas window and I think it's going to be great, as usual, this year. We don't decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving as I like to celebrate one holiday at a time but stop by this month to check out the window. Do stop in on the weekends and let Nanci know what a good job she does on our Christmas windows.

If you're planning a trip to Whitefish and you're on the Amtrak route, you can receive 20% off your next Amtrak purchase traveling to Whitefish. Just go to www.Amtrak.com and use the discount code V458. The offer is valid for this winter and there are some blackout dates so just checkout the website and it will give you all the details. Ride the train this winter and come skiing! I'll look for you on the slopes.

It's been a tough year for everyone but I certainly appreciate your continued patronage of our store and American Craft. We will continue to support American artists and sell only items handcrafted in North America. I think it's important to provide an outlet where American artists can show their work and you can see what creativity goes into contemporary American Craft. Have a safe and happy holiday season!
