The Lane sisters, Ruth Lane and Rebekah Lane Barnett, opened The Purple Pomegranate, a fine craft specialty store on November 26, 1998. Located in downtown Whitefish, Montana, the gallery features hand crafted artware from artists across the United States.
Representing more than 180 American artists, The Purple Pomegranate's eclectic offerings include jewelry, ceramics, musical instruments, toys and games, glass art, fiber art, prints and paintings. We showcase decorative arts and fine crafts - those objects that go beyond the merely functional to add verve, originality and beauty. As craftspeople are gaining in recognition as designers and artists, more people are collecting American crafts. We support this resurgence of contemporary craft by selecting well-designed handcrafted artware exclusively from American craftspeople. The Purple Pomegranate brings you fresh viewpoints on artistic style - a unique alternative to commercially manufactured goods which often lack character and lasting appeal.
The name "The Purple Pomegranate" was chosen to characterize both the extent and nature of the merchandise. Pomegranates are an ancient middle eastern symbol of abundance and fertility; their normal coloration falls in the red to burgundy range. The color purple is associated with elegance, luxury, spirituality and ritual. Therefore, a purple pomegranate would be an unusual fruit, representative of the abundance, quality and eclectic selection of artware carried by The Purple Pomegranate.
